How do I find a qualified counsellor in Pakistan?

Counselling in Pakistan is largely unregulated, so qualifications matter more than titles. Mehwish Salman holds UK CPCAB Level 4 in therapeutic counselling, registration number 433TM4D-128-303701, and works in Urdu and English, online nationwide and in person at the practice, with individuals, couples and families.

Who I work with

What people bring
to these sessions.

Most people arrive after months of managing on their own. That is the usual place to begin, not a late one.

Anxiety

Worry that will not switch off

Racing thoughts, a body on alert, and a mind that rehearses every outcome before it happens.

Pressure

Holding everything together for everyone

Work, parents, in laws, children and money. You are the one who copes, and nobody quite thinks to ask how the coping is going.

Family expectations

Your own life pulling against duty

Marriage timelines, career choices and the guilt attached to wanting something different from what was planned for you.

Couples

A marriage that has gone quiet

Gottman informed sessions on communication, conflict and rebuilding the friendship underneath the relationship.

Stigma

Preferring that nobody knows you came

Many clients choose online sessions precisely so that nobody sees them arrive. That is a sensible choice and nothing to feel awkward about.

Students and young professionals

Pressure arriving earlier each year

Exams, competition and a future that feels narrower than the one you were promised.

Been managing this on your own for a while?

Sessions run online or in person, whichever suits the week.

In person and online

Two ways to
meet here.

In person sessions take place at the practice and suit people who want the room, the routine and the walk home afterwards. Online sessions suit everyone else, and they remove two obstacles that stop people here from starting at all: travel across a large city, and the risk of being recognised in a waiting room.

Sessions run in Urdu, in English, or in both inside the same hour. Many clients switch mid sentence without noticing, and where a feeling only arrives in one language, that itself tells us something.

Couples and family sessions run slightly longer and need booking ahead. Family work looks at the pattern a household repeats rather than appointing one member as the problem, which is often the reason nothing has shifted so far.

My approach

An approach built
around your world.

Therapy here works best when it takes the family seriously rather than treating it as an obstacle. I hold several methods and choose between them depending on whether the week calls for talking, tools, or something quieter.

Talking therapy

Unhurried sessions where you can say anything at all, and I help you find the shape of what you are feeling.

Stress management

Small, practical things you can use between sessions to ease the daily load and look after your energy.

Breathwork

Simple breathing practices that settle the nervous system when thinking alone will not reach it.

Mindful somatic work

Hakomi based approaches that follow what the body holds, useful when emotion sits below language.

Family therapy

Sessions that gently look at the patterns a family repeats together, rather than treating one person as the problem.

Couples therapy

Gottman informed work on communication, conflict, trust, and the friendship underneath the relationship.

Your first session

What the first hour
actually looks like.

Most people arrive unsure what is expected of them. Very little is, and nothing is compulsory.

First ten minutes

Settling in

We talk about practical things: confidentiality, how sessions run, and what you would like from this. Nerves are normal and very common.

The middle

Your own words

You describe what brought you here, in Urdu, English or both. I ask questions, and you answer only what you want to answer.

Towards the end

Making sense of it

We name what seems to be happening and what you would like to be different. No diagnosis, and no verdict on you.

The last five minutes

What next

We agree whether to continue, how often, and what might help before we next meet. Stopping here is a perfectly acceptable choice.

Online or in person, whichever feels easier.

Sessions in Urdu, English, or both. Nobody needs to know you came.

Nature, breath and the nervous system

Finding your footing
when something strong
is running inside.

How do you learn to stay calm when you feel something strong rising?

Calm is a skill rather than a personality trait, and it is taught through the body before the mind. Slow breathing, grounding through the senses, and contact with the natural world all lower the physical arousal that fuels panic and anger. Practised in ordinary moments, those skills become available in hard ones.

Most of us arrive wanting the feeling to stop. What tends to help more is learning to stay upright while it moves through, since a wave that is ridden passes far sooner than one that is fought. Nature does a surprising amount of this work on its own, and it is more available here than people assume: a morning walk before the heat, the Margalla trails, a rooftop at dusk, twenty minutes of daylight before the day swallows you. In summer that usually means early mornings, and the principle holds through the year.

Breath

Settling the body first

Simple breathing practices that lower arousal in minutes, so thinking becomes possible again.

Grounding

Coming back to the room

Sensory techniques that interrupt a spiral before it gathers pace, usable anywhere and unnoticed by anyone.

Nature

Healing that draws on the outdoors

Daylight, green space and movement built into the week, because the nervous system responds to place as much as to insight.

Two minute check in

Wondering whether
therapy is for you?

Six short questions about the last two weeks. Nobody sees your answers, nothing is saved, and it all runs inside your own browser.

This check in gives you language for what you are noticing. It does not diagnose anything, and only a proper assessment can do that.

Question 1 of 6

Over the last two weeks, how often has worry stayed with you through the day?

Sessions and fees

Clear fees, stated
before you begin.

Sessions run by secure video, so all you need is a quiet room and a pair of headphones.

Mehwish Salman

Psychotherapist and Counsellor

I qualified as a psychotherapist and counsellor and I hold UK CPCAB Level 4 in therapeutic counselling, registration number 433TM4D-128-303701. I work with adults, couples and families, and I shape each session around the person in front of me rather than a fixed script.

My continuing professional development covers stress management, breathwork, Hakomi based mindful somatic approaches, family therapy, and couples therapy using Gottman methods. That range lets me bring the right tool to the right moment rather than stretching one method over every situation.

Clients here often ask what a UK qualification means in practice. It means a UK awarding body set the standard for the coursework, the supervised client hours and the final assessment, and that the same standard applies to every session I run, wherever the client happens to be.

Questions

What clients here
usually ask first.

Is counselling confidential in a city where everyone knows everyone?

Yes. Sessions are strictly confidential. What you bring to a session stays between us. Clients who want the extra layer of privacy choose online sessions, since nobody sees you arrive or leave.

Can I have sessions in Urdu?

Yes, and you can move between Urdu and English freely. Neither is a second best option.

Do you work with couples and families?

Yes. I have training in family therapy and in couples therapy using Gottman methods. These sessions run longer, so book them ahead.

Can you prescribe medication?

Counselling and medication are separate things, and medication needs a psychiatrist. If our work suggests an assessment would help you, I will mention it gently and you can pursue both together.

What if my family disapproves of therapy?

That comes up often and it is workable. Some clients keep sessions private, some bring family in later, and some make explaining it to their family part of the work itself. You decide the pace.

What happens in the first session?

We spend the hour getting oriented. You describe what brings you here, I ask about your history and current situation, and together we name what you want to be different. You control how much you share on day one, and you decide afterwards whether to continue.

How many sessions will I need?

Some people find that six to eight sessions cover a specific issue. Others stay longer for deeper work. We review progress regularly and you decide when to stop.

How do payment and cancellation work?

Payment reaches me at least 48 hours before the session and confirms your slot. If you cancel at the last minute without a genuine reason the fee is not refunded, because the time stays reserved for you. Tell me as early as you can when something genuine comes up and I will move your session.

How much does therapy cost in Pakistan?

Tell me whether you would prefer online or in person and I will give you my current fee straight away, before you commit to anything. There is no assessment fee and no separate intake charge, and payment reaching me 48 hours ahead is what confirms the slot.

Is counselling actually regulated in Pakistan?

Counselling here is largely unregulated, so anyone may describe themselves as a counsellor or therapist. That is precisely why you should ask about qualifications. I hold UK CPCAB Level 4 in therapeutic counselling, registration number 433TM4D-128-303701, and you are welcome to ask me anything about it.

What is the difference between a psychologist, a psychiatrist and a counsellor here?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe. A psychologist has trained in psychology and may carry out assessments. A counsellor or psychotherapist provides talking therapy. I am the third of those, so if medication or a formal assessment is needed, I will refer you rather than attempt it.

My family would not approve. Can I keep this private?

Yes, and many clients do. Sessions are strictly confidential, nothing is shared with anyone, and online sessions mean nobody sees you arrive anywhere. Some clients bring family in much later, and some never do. You set that pace, not me.

Booking

Two easy ways
